Pokia - Retro Phones of the Future

Published: 6th Sep 2004 01:41 PM
OTA2U interviews Nicolas Roope from Pokia. Creators of the greatest phone accessories known to man!

How did all this come about?

In my day job I work with telcos and technology. I think like a lot of people I'm a bit bored with what the phone companies have to offer. It's always new, futuristic product that is devoid of any funk. I had the idea and it made me laugh so I started making them and sticking them on Ebay to sell.

The Holborn Exchange

The Ealing model

Where do you get the receivers, surely there aren't that many left?

I get them from Ebay although other sources are starting to surface. I am also making some special ones in China.

What phones are they compatible with?

At the moment whichever I make them for. So far mainly Sony-Ericsson and Motorola and a couple for Nokia.

What's the sound quality like?

Pretty good. Even if I use cheap components the sound is really warm. Like the wooden body of an acoustic guitar, the chamber of the phone reverberates and softens the sound.

Where can we get them?

At the moment just Ebay. However I'll get some to sell, probably through Pokia this side of Christmas I hope. If people sign up to the Pokia list I'll of course keep everyone up to date on this.

The Chorleywood

The Ealing Bluetooth

The Bluetooth model is cool. When using it in public, what is the reaction like? Do people look at you like your mental?

People think I'm a bit mental but they really like it too. The strange thing for me is that everyone has seen a mobile, everyone has seen an old phone but put them together and it means something completely different and rouses a strong reaction. I think people are a bit intimidated by technology and so like to see something making fun of it.

Has any phone manufacturers got in touch?

None of the big guys. I think the idea is a bit against what they're doing and their interests. The big guys only pump out futuristic stuff for a reason; they want to lock us all into the endless upgrade path. Pokia is creating timeless objects that are deliberately backward looking.

Does the CB model come with a handbook on 'trucker talk'?

I guess it should do. I had a CB for a week when I was a kid and just shouted all the CB words which got boring so spent the last few days swearing at people and then quickly changing channels (sorry if I offended anyone). All I can remember is 'bears" means police; that's probably all you need to know. I had a dig through the web to find CB speak but there aren't many useful references.

What has the response been like so far?

Really good. Loads of press (a lot I haven't put up on the site yet). Lots of really excited emails and what not. I think generally people love the idea and want one. I hope I can make that happen pretty soon.

Any ideas for integrating any other old school telecommunication technology?

My next prototype is going to be a bluetooth conference calling set up using an 80's ghetto blaster and a radio cabs style desktop microphone.
